Development of Mplus started in October 1995 with the first version being released in November 1998, the second version in February 2001, the third version in March 2004, the fourth version in February 2006, the fifth version in November 2007, the sixth version in April 2010, the seventh version in September of 2012, and the eighth version in April of 2017. The development of Mplus has been funded in part with Federal funds from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institutes of Health, in the form of Small Business Innovation Research contracts and grants to the small business Muthén & Muthén.
